An insider journey with a focus on design and CRAFTSMANSHIP

We travel through Rajasthan, where the state capital, Jaipur, has been designated a World Craft City and is renowned for world-class craftsmanship.

There is something very special about travelling to explore design and traditional crafts. They tell us so much about a place – about its traditions, its people and the way people live.

On my journeys, we visit family-run workshops and designers, where proud craft traditions remain a natural part of both local identity and everyday life.

Everything is carefully selected, from the hotels and passionate local guides to beautiful cafés, shops and restaurants.

We always travel in small groups of no more than 12.

“I can highly recommend Take Time to Care’s journey to India. Everything is arranged in advance – from visits to museums, block-printing workshops and temples to shopping, design centres and much more. We travel comfortably by air-conditioned minibus, and Sofie has every single detail completely under control. A truly wonderful experience.”

travel with Sofie

I have been travelling in Rajasthan for more than ten years and return again and again to the same people and places. Take Time to Care grew out of these relationships – with craftspeople, small workshops, women’s initiatives, beautiful historic hotels and passionate local guides with wonderful stories to share.

I trained as a lawyer and also work as a consultant for the World Bank. I have a particular interest in women’s rights and social enterprises and have been a mentor with the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative for the past six years.

I have lived in London, Singapore and Hong Kong – and I love to travel.

Itinerary

Departure from Copenhagen – Day 1

We travel from Copenhagen to Delhi and begin our journey towards Rajasthan.

Agra & the Taj Mahal – Day 2

In Agra, we will of course visit the Taj Mahal, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. I have included the Taj Mahal because it really is something extraordinary to experience – even if you have seen it in photographs a thousand times.

Our local guide in Agra has many years of experience bringing the city’s history and culture to life. Through his stories, we not only discover the Taj Mahal, but also gain a sense of Agra and its history.

Sunrise & onwards to Jaipur – Day 3

After watching the sun rise over the Taj Mahal, we continue towards Jaipur – The Pink City. On the way, we visit Chand Baori, one of Rajasthan’s most impressive stepwells.

We arrive in Jaipur in the afternoon and start with lunch at one of my favourite cafés. It will not take long to discover why Jaipur is such an extraordinary place for textiles, jewellery, design and traditional crafts. We visit some of the shops and smaller places that I particularly love.

In Jaipur, we stay in a beautifully restored haveli – a small family-run hotel with a lovely rooftop terrace overlooking the rooftops and temples of the Pink City. It is exactly how I think you should stay in Jaipur.

The Old City – Day 4

We begin the day with a walk through Jaipur’s old city and its historic havelis with our local guide, who has a particular eye for the city’s architecture and history. We go behind the beautiful pink façades of the old city and discover some of the details you might otherwise simply walk past.

We have lunch in a beautifully restored haveli recognised by the Michelin Guide, before visiting Nila House – one of my favourite places in Jaipur. Here, traditional craft techniques and materials meet contemporary design, offering a fascinating glimpse into how old craft traditions can continue to evolve in a modern world.

Later, we explore the area around Chameli Market, one of Jaipur’s historic centres for gemstones and jewellery. Small traders and workshops sit side by side, giving us an insight into the knowledge and craftsmanship behind Jaipur’s long history as a jewellery city.

We end the day with drinks and dinner at beautiful Bar Palladio.

Jaipur Awakens – Day 5

We start early and experience Jaipur as the city wakes. We travel with the women of Pink City Rickshaw Company, which trains and employs women from low-income families as drivers. I have been riding with the women since my first visit to Jaipur, and I love the project because it combines a wonderful way of experiencing the city with new income opportunities for the women.

We visit the flower market and experience the morning aarti at Govind Devji Temple before continuing to City Palace, which remains the official residence of Jaipur’s royal family.

After lunch in the beautiful oasis of Samode Haveli, we continue to Amber Fort, with its extraordinary architecture and views across the hills surrounding Jaipur.

We also visit the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing – a small but beautiful museum and one of the best places to understand the history, techniques and craftsmanship behind the block prints we see throughout Rajasthan.

Onwards to Chandelao – Day 6

Today we leave Jaipur and travel towards Chandelao, a small village outside Jodhpur. Along the way, we stop at the colourful Patrika Gate and visit a small family-run paper factory.Chandelao is a very special place for Take Time to Care. I first came here around ten years ago and have kept returning ever since. Over the years, I have come to know both the place and many of the people who live here – and these are exactly the kind of relationships I want to share on my journeys.

We stay at Chandelao Garh, a small historic fort in the heart of the village, still owned by the family of Praduman Singh. Carefully restored, it is now a small and atmospheric hotel.

It is not classic luxury – it is personal, beautiful and full of history, and we stay right in the middle of the village life we have come to experience.

In the evening, we have dinner under the clear desert sky.

Dabu & Sunder Rang – Day 7

We begin the day with a morning walk through Chandelao as the village slowly wakes around us – cows wandering through the streets and women in their beautiful, colourful saris.

After breakfast, it is our turn to get our hands dirty and try the traditional dabu technique. Dabu is an ancient mud-resist printing technique, where patterns are printed onto fabric using a special mud mixture before the cloth is dyed with natural dyes such as indigo.

In the afternoon, we visit Sunder Rang Arts & Craft Center. I have been visiting the women here for the past ten years, and over the years we have worked on many small projects together.

There is always such a warm welcome. We have time to see their work, talk and, of course, buy some of the things the women make. The visit offers a wonderful insight into how craft can create professional pride, community and new opportunities for women in a small village like Chandelao.

The Blue City – Day 8

We walk through Jodhpur’s old city, where narrow streets, blue houses and small temples create a sea of blue beneath the mighty Mehrangarh Fort.

We make our way through the bazaar around the Clock Tower and up towards the fort, with wonderful views across the city and the dry desert landscape beyond.

Jodhpur has a character all of its own. It is a little more raw than Jaipur, but incredibly beautiful and almost magical, with its blue façades and old houses clustered beneath the walls of the fort.

Along the way, we also stop by some of our own favourite little places and say hello to people we know.

In the evening, we return to Chandelao and another night under the stars.

The Rhythm of Village Life – Day 9

After a few days in Chandelao, the rhythm of village life already begins to feel a little familiar. There is time for one last walk through the village and to say goodbye – or perhaps see you again – to the women at Sunder Rang and the people we have met along the way.

This is exactly why I like to stay in Chandelao for more than one night. When you give a place a little time, you begin to notice the small, magical moments of everyday life that are so easy to miss when simply passing through.

Later, we continue to Jodhpur Airport and fly to Delhi, where we spend the night in Aerocity, close to the airport.

Returning Home – Day 10

We pack our very full suitcases and take a morning flight back to Copenhagen, arriving in the late afternoon.
